Down the years, short film has allowed filmmakers to experiment with ideas in a way that has often produced more profound results than might have been possible in another form. Chris Marker's famous "La Jetée" certainly achieves this, as does "Night and Fog", made by Alan Resnais
. This latter was one of the first documentary films to deal with the legacy of the concentration camps, blending historical images with modern footage from the site of the former camps.
For other filmmakers, shorts can be where they first test their skills. Martin Scorsese is well known today as the most Academy Award nominated director alive, and he first proved himself by making short films. The Big Shave (1967) was created at the height of the Vietnam War, and its portrait of doomed youth would be returned to in Mean Streets
, the film with which he first achieved a greater notoriety.
Anthology films are movies that consist of a series of shorts, and one of the most beloved of these is Jim Jarmusch
's "Coffee and Cigarettes" (2003). This anthology of eleven segments first started as three independent short films, featuring, among others, Roberto Benigni, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and Iggy Pop.
