"At the age of 18, I went to film school and became a filmmaker. At 30, I had a nervous breakdown, a psychosis. And then again, and again. I became chronically ill.” This highly personal documentary/film diary about living with psychosis comes from Berlin-based filmmaker Gamma Bak. Head Cold, shot over several years, is not a chronicle of episodes of madness. It is, rather, a lucid, reflective, searching work in which Bak addresses the various social, psychological, and physical debilitations that attend her affliction: the stigma and loneliness of mental illness; the loss of self-esteem; the side effects of medication; the constant self-doubt in which every experience of euphoria, every instance of sadness, is both scrutinized and feared lest it be not “normal” emotion but a symptom of illness. The film’s title comes from the suggestion, by Bak’s boyfriend at the time of her first psychotic episode, that “It's all like a cold in the head, it'll pass.” It doesn’t, of course.
