"Whilst Cape Town has recently been voted the world’s No1 tourist destination, it has 130,000 people living in shacks and 35% of the inhabitants live under the poverty line (less than R3500/£195) per month. But it has a community of people who live in even poorer conditions….there are an estimated 7,000 street people who live on the edge, fighting for survival each day. They are one of the world’s biggest populations of street people and are fighting back against what they claim is a callous disregard for their plight. Authorities are trying to move them on from parks and public amenities which fear they will lose their tourist appeal once overrun by the growing army of homeless. The cruel mentality of “out of sight, out of mind” has infiltrated the actions and policies of both the authorities and some residents. The well being of a street persons dog seems to weigh more heavily on the consciences of many than that of the actual street person. But a number of influential residents in the cape are taking up the cause.”
