The Restoration of the Saadian Tombs
In the medina of Marrakech is the Royal Necropolis of the Saadian dynasty, built in the 16th century by Sultan Ahmad Al Mansur Essaadi. This architectural jewel had fallen into a state of disrepair. However, in 2013, the Dr Leila Mezian's Foundation joined forces with the Moroccan Ministry of Culture to restore the site in order to showcase and preserve the memory and heritage of Moroccan history. Over a period of two years, the project drew upon cutting-edge technology and the immense talent of specialist craftsmen known as 'Maalems' to work on the Zellige tilework, wood, plaster and, marble. The Mihrab Room, the twelve columns Room, the three Niche Room and the Cupola of Lalla Messaouda are regaining their former splendour and restoring the name of this magical place.
