Cattle herder Kidane and his family who reside in the dunes of Timbuktu find their quiet lives abruptly disturbed when militant Islamic rebels occupy the nearby city. Up to this day, he has lived a quiet life with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya and Issan, a 12 year old shepherd boy in the dunes. The inhabitants endure the regime that has been put into place by the jihadists to control their faith. Music, laughter, even soccer games have been banned, the women turned into shadows trying to put up a spark of resistance. Kidane and his family manage to be spared from the chaos for long until Kidane makes a mistake.
